20 years ago Southern Steppa was the first crew in Australia dedicated to the emerging sounds from South London, now known as dubstep. Inspired by the influences of dub, 2-step, garage and drum n bass, the Southern Steppa crew (Kodama, Eli and Zerodub) spent late nights through the 2000’s ordering white labels directly from the UK to unleash the deepest bass experiments on an audience half a world away from their London roots.
In the years since, dubstep has evolved to be a much broader sound and can be heard anywhere from the club to the pop charts. Southern Steppa has remained focused on the original dubstep styles and found plenty of kindred spirits in other Sydney crews from ‘the dons’ Garage Pressure to Foreign Dub, Frigid and of course Void (our Ruffage partners in crime). We’re celebrating the last 20 years by flinging open the doors of The Trocadero to all our Sydney mates and dropping our favourite dubstep, breakstep and grime tunes from the last 20 years alongside two of our favourite selectors: the amazing Lorna Clarkson and Sofie Loizou.
Join us on August 16 to raise a glass to the last 20 years! As always, free entry from 9pm-late at The Trocadero.
