Void - Grime Special

Void - March 07, 2008

Void seems to be going from strength to strength these days. Now without doubt, Sydney’s most popular regular dubstep event, Void is having a grime special on March 7.

Personally, I haven’t dug any grime out of my record bag in years, so dusting off those old whites certainly sent a little shiver of delight down my spine. I’m planning on reviving loads of dark 4×4 garage, sub-low and of course, plenty of circa 2003 grime - can’t wait! No doubt the rest of the line-up will make this a no-brainer for any Sydney grime fans.

Vex’d Flyer - Dec 07

Yes, yes - I know i’ve dropped the ball with all kinds of things this year. Blogging and putting up new mixes are just part of a very long list of things I have had to put to one side as 2007 became pretty much my craziest year on record. 2008 looks already determined to take the title however… Instead of excuses though, I thought I might put up a little mix - just scraping in with an 07 at the end of its date.

These are the tunes I played at the awesome Vex’d gig at Hermans Bar last night. Fortunately for me, I got to play first and so I could get away with dropping stuff that didn’t necessarily fit neatly into the dubstep camp. So here’s 45mins of randomness for the silly season. Enjoy…

Kodama!

Kodama Tree

All this time, I had no idea that Miyazaki’s characters in Princess Mononoke were actually based on light reflecting off water droplets. Such a wonderfully simple - yet thoroughly beautiful - idea. If anyone can read Japanese, i’d love to know exactly what this says.

The Only Prescription Is More Cowbell

Truer words have never been spoken. What is it about the humble cowbell that just makes absolutely any track? I need to get me one. So in my quest to bring the funk, check out an absurd plug-in, and something I really can’t be sure isn’t an ellaborate piss take?

The only other potential cure for this fever is the new Transformers movie. The thought of 20 foot high robots totally brings out my inner 14 year old (not that he was ever too far away). I’m excited like you wouldn’t believe. I may even bring a cowbell along for the ride.

Gearlust

I have a terrible habit of Gearlust. It’s a disease that often costs me my entire paypacket, not to mention leaving my girlfriend’s sanity hanging by a thread. For anyone that shares my affliction, don’t watch the following.

It’s edited in that terrible MTV manner, but worth sitting through - there’s some rediculously exciting technology being thrown around like confetti in San Francisco studios, Asphodel and Recombinant Media Labs.

A Fresh Start

Some of you may have noticed that my Southern Steppa blog disappeared recently. It was all actually due to some overzealous site changes on my behalf. I have just finished rebuilding the Southern Steppa site template and early on in the piece decided that I should do some testing on my own blog, just in case something goes wrong. It did. Databases were corrupted and my blog disappeared forever.

I was initally planning on leaving things that way. Allowing Southern Steppa to grow on its own (without the endless banter from myself), and turning my focus to new projects like Audio Construct. It wasn’t long until I realised I needed my blog back to do some serious ranting and venting though. So here it is, all shiney and new - ready to take on the world. Again.
